Carnival of Venice 2021 Date Opening and Closing
Presented in collaboration with Associazione Vela al Terzo, curated by Chiara Spangaro, with project manager Marcella Ferrari, the project was co-organized by Magazzino Italian Art, with support from Mazzoleni. Red Regatta commenced on May 8, with an artist talk and community open house at Ocean Space and a preview performative regatta on May 11 on the northern lagoon at Fondamente Nove. Each of the four Red Regatta performances was visible in a different area of the lagoon across the city and ideal viewing locations were listed in an interactive map below.
Red Regatta is the first artwork to be registered as a Clean Regatta , a program of Sailors for the Sea that mobilizes sailors to protect the ocean through education and activism. As the boats glided though the lagoon in unison against the sky, sea, and cityscape, the reds reference forces of life and passion, alarm and urgency, and Venice itself—from its bricks and terra cotta rooftops, to its flag and history of trade in red pigment, to paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, and other Venetian masters.

Remember to maintain social distancing. The great charm of this church lies in a sombre and archaic exterior enclosing an ingeniously articulated interior, which is dominated by the warm presence of wooden beams and ceiling. The re-building of the church in consisted in a Byzantine structure with material brought back from the Levant after the IV Crusade – such as the fine green marble column with Ionic capital praised by John Ruskin and Gabriele d’Annunzio; vice versa apsis directed towards the campo that date back to the XV century. The monument, today fully appreciated in merit of the recent restoration that gave back the beauty of the “keel” roof from the beginning of the XV century, also conserves a number of Venetian masterpiece paintings such as Lorenzo Lotto’s main altarpiece “Virgin Mary and Child with Apostles and Saints” , which is one of the few works by the artist that can still be found in Venice.
In the old sacristy there are some of Jacopo Palma il Giovane’s best work, including the very Titianesque Altarpiece with “Father da Ponte” ; while the new sacristy contains a panelled ceiling decorated with works by Paolo Veronese and some of Francesco Bassano’s best pieces.
